To Drain or Not To Drain?

The best part of this article are some of the comments on it…I’ve included some at the bottom…

Oregon’s Portland Water Bureau is draining an 8 million-gallon reservoir after surveillance cameras caught a man urinating into it this week.

The move will cost the water bureau $35,000  $28,000 in lost revenue and $7,500 in disposal costs, CNN affiliate KATU-TV reports.

Is that worth it when the urine involved is really a drop in the bucket?

Scientifically, no, said Dave Stone, an assistant professor of toxicology at Oregon State University, who spoke to The Oregonian newspaper about the, er, leak.

“How many animals are doing that or birds?” Stone asked. “I don’t want to second-guess the city, but I can’t think of anything chemically that would have me be concerned.”

Dr. Gary Oxman, a Multnomah County health officer, also told The Oregonian: “The health risk associated with that is really, really tiny.”

A healthy bladder holds up to 16 ounces of urine, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Water bureau administrator David Shaff told KATU it’s not about the science.

“There are people who will say it’s an overreaction,” he said. “I don’t think so. I think just dealing with the ‘yuck factor,’ I can imagine how many people would be saying, ‘I made orange juice with that water this morning. That’s not what I want to hear.’ ”

And City Commissioner Randy Leonard told CNN affiliate KGW-TV that the water in the Mount Tabor reservoir is chlorinated before it enters the reservoir.”The water that’s in the reservoir that you see is literally the water that you drink,” Leonard said.

Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau told KGW the whole mess didn’t have to be.

“It’s really an unfortunate incident that probably could have been avoided had he chosen a bush,” Simpson said.

Comments:

Shampoohorns Well, if you ever wanted to pee in that reservoir, I say now go for it!

Ricky Get a water filter.

cdogg I made lemonade with that water this morning and it tasted fine!

Morris Is that why people from Portland have such white healthy teeth?

backstroke in other news, at least 300 ounces of urine has been deposited into the reservoir prior to the installation of cameras

Jimbo Well if a guy can walk up and pee in the drinking water supply what is stopping someone from filling up a massive super sooker with lsd and squirting it into the water? The issue doesn’t seem to be that someone urinated in the water and they had to empty it but that our water supply is so easily tampered with. Although I would enjoy a whole city full of freaks on acid, it is a scary thought.

  • Freshies Oh man, that would totally make my day today.

(El) Brad Pitt Arrested!

Even drug dealer/cops dream of being Brad Pitt…

MEXICO CITY — Federal authorities have detained an ex-police officer accused of leading the armed wing of the Juarez Cartel in northern Mexico.

Marco Antonio Guzman was captured Wednesday in the Mexican state of Chihuahua that borders the U.S. along with two alleged accomplices.

Guzman is known by several aliases, including “El Brad Pitt.”

He was brought to the Mexican capital Thursday and paraded before the news media.

Police said Guzman was involved in the car bombing of a Ciudad Juarez federal police station in July.

They also accuse him of being involved in drug-trafficking operations across Chihuahua. The state is one of the worst-affected areas of the drug war, with an estimated 3,000 people killed in 2010 alone.

Vallecito’s 5th Grade 20-Year Reunion

Yes, you read that correctly.  My Alma Mater, Vallecito, had an unofficial 20 year reunion. And it was totally radical, even more than the slap bracelet.  It was held at none other than the prestigious elementary school known as Vallecito of course. Students of the class of 1991 were invited to celebrate this milestone by partaking in a lovely and mildly competitive game of whiffle ball while enjoying a bbq and a keg.  That’s right, a keg.  We shoulder tapped some guy at the liquor store to buy it for us and it worked!  As people started trickling in, you could feel the energy and the anticipation of who was going to show up next.  It didn’t matter how much time had passed, it was so easy for everyone to pick up as if not a single day had passed.  (Except for a certain someone who had some venting to do regarding certain kindergarten behavior).  Mr. Lakin, one of our 5th grade teachers, showing up was a big highlight for me and very indicative of the relationship our class had with our teachers.  After some catching up and polaroid pictures, it was time to start playing.

Katy Atchison had been able to re-design Vallecito’s logo from a picture which Ando then used to make t-shirts.  These were used to decipher the 4 teams.  Unfortunately, the winds did not agree with our plan. Luckily, there was a back up plan.   Kickball!  With the keg playing permanent 2nd baseman.  After my team totally kicked ass, we decided to start bbqing.  We ate, checked out the playground, ran some obstacle courses and combed our hair for the class pic. What a wonderful day!  But wait, there’s more!

We then all headed over to Lococo’s because where else would we go?  We ate pizza, watched Ando’s kid chug a Sierra Nevada and had a great time. We ended the night at Trevor’s.  No one took their bras off but Amanda Novak did freak some old dude.  It was a fabulous way to spend a Saturday.  I know a lot of people don’t enjoy or look forward to school reunions but as my friend Cory Ogden pointed out, there are no bad memories of elementary school.  And I couldn’t agree more.  Big props to Ando Torrey for putting this event together, to Darren Nolan for being the paparazzi and Mr. Lakin for being yard-duty!  And even bigger props to everyone who came out and took me back to the lost days of innocence.  Yes, I was innocent at one point in my life….why does that make you laugh?

Please Help A Friend Fight Blood Cancer

Happy Friday to my cherished readers!  One of my friends sent me this email today and I wanted to share it with everyone as it affects so many people and it supports a good cause.  Every donation counts!

This summer I’ve dedicated myself to helping in the fight against blood cancers.  For the last month I’ve been training six days a week to compete in theAlcatraz triathlon. That’s right swimming from the “Rock” to the marina followed by a 25 mile bike ride and 7 mile run through a city that has a few hills. I’m doing this to help raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) but you can help without doing all that.

As you may know my father and little brother have both battled blood cancer (lymphoma and leukemia). Their treatments consisted of chemotherapy and stem cell replacement.  It was extremely difficult to watch as they battled this disease.  With incredible strength and courage they were both able to complete treatment and now they’re both in remission!

Every four minutes someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer and every ten minutes someone dies.  So my family is lucky in that it only happens once a year to us and no one has died.   I decided to join Team in Training in honor of them and all of the amazing people that supported them through their treatments.  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training has raised over 1 billion dollars for lifesaving cancer research.  My family has benefited greatly from this amazing organization and I’m just trying to do a small part to give back.

Here’s where I ask for money. You can use all major forms of plastic at my awesome website. Or mail (like in an envelope) me (Johnathan Walker)  a check made out to LLS and send to :  3714 Mission St., San Francisco, CA 94110

If you work for one of those cool rich companies that matches donations please fill out the company name on the website or put it on the check.

Trying to raise $500 by Sunday or my team might drown me!

Check out some pic’s of me training:

See me training in the pool

Here’s a pic of me on my bike

Or me working out at the track

Thanks for your help,

John Walker

22 Year Old Heiress Buys Aaron Spelling’s Estate

Petra Ecclestone reportedly buys Spelling estate for $85 million

June 15, 2011 | 11:07 am By The Ministry of Gossip, The LA Times

Petra Ecclestone buys the Spelling mansion

Petra Ecclestone, a 22-year-old British heiress, has reportedly bought Candy Spelling‘s Holmby Hills estate, the most expensive residential listing in the United States.

“The Manor,” as the late TV producer Aaron Spelling‘s 56,500-square-foot home is known, has been on the market at $150 million for more than two years, according to reports Tuesday.

Though Candy had held firm on the asking price over the years, sources told TMZ the place went into escrow at $85 million. Now do we all believe housing prices have declined more steeply than during the Great Depression?

The daughter of British Formula One exec Bernie Ecclestone, whose worth is estimated at $4 billion, is a sometime fashion designer. The Spelling joint was reportedly her second-choice mansion, poor thing.

The house, which is larger than the White House and believed to have more than 100 rooms, has features including a bowling alley, a flower-cutting room, a wine cellar/tasting room, a barbershop and a silver storage room. Outside are a tennis court, a koi pond, gardens, a citrus orchard and a swimming pool with a pool house.

More than 100 vehicles can be accomodated in the motor court and 16 carports, and a service wing houses the staff in five maids’ bedrooms and two butlers’ suites, the Los Angeles Timesreported in 2009.

Aaron Spelling — executive producer on series including “The Love Boat,” “Dynasty” and most recently “Charmed” — died in June 2006. Daughter Tori Spelling and her brother Randy Spellingeach inherited less than $1 million at the time from the estate, then estimated to be worth $300 million. Tori is now pregnant with her third child.

Ecclestone plans to split her time between L.A. and London, where she owns another mansion, according to the Guardian.

This Weekend: North Beach Festival, Juneteenth, SF Bicycle Music Festival, Marin Art Festival, King of the County BBQ & Music Festival, Helifest

Another beautiful weekend and the possibilities are endless!  Let us celebrate the nearing summer solstice with some outdoor events shall we?

Start Friday off with some delicious bites from the bounty of food trucks around the Bay.  Food Truck Crush is at the Larkspur Ferry and Off the Grid is at Fort Mason.  Jazz by the Bay in Sausalito is a great place to bring a picnic (don’t forget the wine and beer!) and listen to live music.  There is a farmer’s market near by as well as some food and drinks being sold there in case you don’t bring anything.

Saturday and Sunday is the 57th Annual North Beach Festival from 10am-6pm.  Besides live music and great food, there will also be a pizza tossing contest and cooking demos.  I highly recommend taking public transportation in as parking in North Beach is a bitch but if you must drive in, here are some parking options:

Validated Parking is available for $3.00 from 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM: Golden Gateway Garage, 250 Clay, between Battery & Drumm. A “Park & Ride Shuttle” bus departs every few minutes. Ask for the Broadway/Columbus stop. The festival is one block north. Return stop at Grant & Broadway. Look for the red and white “Park & Ride” sign. The ONLY validation stamp is located at Calzone’s Restaurant, 430 Columbus. No purchase necessary.

Additional Parking is available at:  735 Vallejo (south side of street) between Stockton and Powell, 766 Vallejo (north side of street above Central Station) between Stockton and Powell and on Filbert between Columbus and Mason.

Also this weekend is the 61st Annual Juneteenth in San Francisco. Held every year as a celebration of African American history and culture, there is lots of music, entertainment, arts and crafts and of course delicious food.  On Saturday at 11am there is a parade, and from 1-6pm there is a car show at Fillmore and Fulton.

If you feel like getting some exercise while you hang out, on Saturday is the SF Bicycle Music Festival from 11am-11pm.  It’s the world’s largest 100% bicycle-powered music festival starting at Golden Gate Park (from 12-4pm) and ending up in Potrero Hill.

The Marin Art Festival is being held on Saturday and Sunday at the Marin Civic Center from 10am-6pm.  There will be over 250 artists in addition to live music, entertainment, wine and beer, and yummy food including the Great Marin Oysters Feast!

The 5th Annual10am-4pm. King of the County BBQ and Music Festival is being held on Saturday and Sunday at the Martinez Marina Waterfront Park.  BBQ, live music, wine tasting and microbreweries…what more do you need?  Admission and parking is free.

Helifest is being held this Saturday and Sunday at the Hiller Aviation & Museum from 10am-4pm.  In addition to showcasing military and commercial helicopters, there will be food trucks, microbrews, wine and a Kid’s Zone that includes rides, face painting, slides and other activities.

And Happy Father’s Day to all the Papa’s out there!  Have a fun and safe weekend. Don’t drink and drive and always wear sunscreen!

If I have left out a festival, let me know so I can share it with everyone!
