Muir Beach Fireman’s BBQ, Caledonia Spring Festival, Union Street Festival, Bay Area Brewfest

It is officially the beginning of festivals, fairs, BBQ’s and brewfests.  Here are ones that are upcoming:

The 39th annual Muir Beach Firemans BBQ is this Sunday, May 29 starting at noon. Parking is limited so carpooling is recommended.  A minimum $20 donation per car gets you parking and $10 to spend on food, beer, t-shirt etc.

The same day in Sausalito is the annual Caledonia Street Spring Fair from 11-6pm.  There is live music, art and dance as well as a children’s stage.  And of course tons of delicious food including but not limited to thai, indian, burgers, fried artichokes, funnel cakes and one of my personal favorites, cajun corn dogs (corn dog with a hot link- genius!).

San Francisco’s Union Street Festival is Saturday, June 4th and Sunday, June 5th from 10-6pm.  If you haven’t been before, there are tons of arts and crafts booths, live entertainment and delicious food like corn dogs, gyros, BBQ, fish n chips and crawfish etoufee.  Oh and people may or may not be totally boozin it up.  Daytime drinking??!  I would never…

The 2nd annual Bay Area Brewfest is back on June 11th from 2-5pm and being held at Fort Mason.  For $21 (regularly $40), you get unlimited tastings from Lagunitas Brewing Company, Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada, Pyramid Breweries, Mendocino Brewing Company and many others.  SF’s finest food trucks will also be in attendance to ensure you don’t blackout (although a brown out may occur).  Get your tickets now!

This should’ve wasted at least 10 minutes of your workday.  You can thank me later.

Ike’s Place in San Francisco

Ike’s Place is a San Francisco legend.  Beside being highly publicized for their eviction battles with their landlord at their former spot, they are known for being on Man vs Food and the 30 minute waits.  Ike’s has since reopened in a new spot that has dirty sauce addicts sighing with relief.   These creative sandwiches have even more creative names to match like the Super Mario (meatballs, mozzarella sticks, marinara), the Matt Cain (vote here to make it ESPN’s #1 Fanwich), and the Lex Luthor (chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak, rib eye steak, french dressing, mozzarella sticks, American cheese).  There are even vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.  Although I highly recommend the Kryptonite (on Man vs Food) which is roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, salami, turkey, bacon, ham, mozzarella sticks, stuffed jalapeno poppers, beer battered onion rings, avocado, pesto, extra pepper jack.  Sounds filthy and delicious.  Right now you can get 30% off dinner by clicking here.

Stuff and Things

J-Crew, Global Golf, Last Call, The Counter

J.Crew is having their Spring Sale online and in stores which is an extra 30% off all sale items by using the code LOVEIT.  Shipping is free on orders over $100.

Global Golf is having their sitewide Memorial Day sale starting now.  I’m sure you needed an excuse to get new golf attire…

Last Call by Neiman Marcus has started their Memorial Day sale online and in stores.  They are giving an extra 40% off your entire purchase.  The sale ends on May 25th.

If you haven’t been to The Counter yet, I highly recommend it.  Who doesn’t like a place that allows you to build a gourmet burger with toppings like jalapenos, fried eggs, and roasted green chiles, cheeses like horseradish cheddar and brie and sauces that include roasted garlic aioli and basil pesto?  Not to mention it has flatscreens for sports and a full bar.  They now have a great deal on Tuesdays (4pm-closing) for those of you who enjoy a burger and a beer (yes, there are some people that don’t).  For $15, you can get 4 premium mini burgers to go with 4 beer pairings.   There are locations in Corte Madera, San Mateo, Walnut Creek and San Jose.

This should help your Tuesday go by a little quicker!

Shout Out to…

Jason Alandy for designing my logo for me.  You’re the best!

Andrew, Brandon, and John for allowing me to see them in their spandex bike costumes.  Totally radical.

Daniel and Garett at Cafe Des Amis (pics of them to come).  If you haven’t been there yet, you need to get to the bar and watch Daniel shake a mean espresso martini with his perfectly coiffed sideburns.  If you are dining and want to be schooled on wines, request to sit in Garett’s section.  Tell them Babs sent you.  This may or may not work in your favor…

Sol Food’s New Location

Sol Food’s lease ran out on their original 4th Street location so they moved….across the street.  They are now located at 811 4th Street in a location that is, believe it or not, smaller than the original spot.  It only has 4 seats inside but it has a very nice patio that you can eat at around back.  You have to go around the corner to get to it but it has plenty of seats and heat lamps for when it gets cold.  And if you bought the Got Daily Deals for Sol Food last week, you now have an excuse to check it out immediately!

Portland, Oregon Part 1

Monday night began the one week vacation up the West Coast to the Pacific Northwest.  I took the Amtrak up to Portland, OR from Emeryville.  The Coast Starlight left around 10:30 and went thru many cities including Davis, Sacramento, Chico, Eugene, and Salem.  The seats are extremely comfortable as they recline and you also have a leg rest that you can put up.  It is very similar to sitting in 1st class on a plane.  Every seat has an outlet as well which is great as this trip was a total of 17 hours.  If you wake up early enough you can see Mount Shasta while the sun is coming up.  It is such a beautiful ride thru Oregon, seeing the Willamette River and the stunning greenery and snow capped mountains.  There is a glass enclosed viewing room which provides optimal panoramic views.   The whole trip feels very Oregon Trail-ish which I loved. When you go to get your luggage at the station, they even bring it in on a wagon!  What year is this?

Another perk of taking the train is it drops you off right in Downtown Portland, in the Pearl District.  I highly recommend taking the train if you have a little extra time to dilly dally.  AAA members get a discount on Amtrak.

I stayed at the Ace Hotel which is a small chain that also has hotels in Seattle, Palm Springs and Manhattan.  Located in historical downtown Portland, it is a small, trendy boutique hotel that is very hipster and funky yet cozy at the same time.  They gave me a nice corner room which gave the room a lot of natural lighting.  The rooms are very small but definitely cozy.  I lucked out and got a room with a claw foot tub instead of a shower.  I liked that the hotel had Malin + Goetz toiletries but I was annoyed that they did not provide body lotion.  What I did love was that they provided a black face towel that said “Makeup” on it.  Absolutely brilliant!  I also loved that the hotel provided complimentary bikes to cruise around town on.  I would definitely stay here again.  One more bonus- Stumptown Coffee has an outpost at the hotel for those of you coffee connoisseurs.

For my 1st dinner in Portland, we went to a new restaurant in the Pearl District called Brix Tavern which serves American comfort food.  It offered many options for very reasonable prices.  They started us off with delicious buttery rolls that gave Red Lobster’s biscuits a run for their money.  The herb butter it came with was the icing on the cake.  We shared the Tavern platter which came with buffalo wings, onion rings, cheddar fondue and bread, and bbq pork ribs on top of creamy polenta.  For the entree I shared the Prime Rib and a Roasted Chicken Pot Pie.  The Prime Rib was ordered medium-rare and came out almost medium-well.  Boooooo!!!  It came with a vegetable succotash and truffled mac & cheese.  The mac & cheese had a great sauce but I didn’t love the long tube noodles used.  The Roasted Chicken Pot Pie was delightful with big chunks of chicken and a yummy oat butter crust.  You also have the option of getting the pot pie with rotisserie turkey or prime rib & Portobello mushrooms, or mushrooms & seared greens.  The best part was the $30 bill.

Day 2….To be continued….
