Remembering Aaliyah, 10 years later

By Angel Laws, Special to CNN

(CNN) — It’s been a decade since the tragic death of R&B star and budding actress Aaliyah Dana Haughton.

Just 22 years old at the time of her death, she was in the Bahamas heading back to the States after wrapping up her 2001 music video, “Rock The Boat.”

The twin-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff. Aboard were Aaliyah and eight others — including her hair stylist, Eric Forman, makeup artists Anthony Dodd and Christopher Maldonado, security guard Scott Gallin, video producer Douglas Kratz, Blackground Records employees Keith Wallace and Gina Smith, and the pilot, Luis Morales III. In an instant their lives and Aaliyah’s promising career were gone.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, she quickly garnered a fan base in the early ’90s with her original take on R&B music. Working with industry greats like Missy Elliott, Timbaland, R. Kelly and more, she topped the charts with a slew of hits, including “Back & Forth,” “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number,” “Are You That Somebody” and “We Need A Resolution”.

Aaliyah’s standout fashion sense made her a hot commodity among the fashion crowd: She modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, who showcased her tomboy appeal — baggy jeans and a tight-fitting shirt — and was featured on the covers of many magazines with that trendsetting hair swoop over her left eye.

Her influence on the music game is still relevant today. She has inspired artists from singer-rapper Drake to pop superstar Beyonce. Ciara, who is best known for her singing and dancing moves, has an Aaliyah-inspired stage presence and dressing style.

Singer-songwriter Tank, who worked closely with Aaliyah on her last two albums, spoke with Concrete Loop earlier this year about where she would be right now if she were alive. “She would be at the top and there would probably be a few people who wouldn’t have careers,” he said.

If you think about it, she was already on top. At the time of her death, she had three top-selling albums under her belt, many nominations and awards and was slated to have a big role in “The Matrix Reloaded” and “Matrix Revolution” movies.

She had just completed her work on the film, “Queen of The Damned” and was already being sought after for other movie roles. Not to mention, she had a solid and loyal fan base. However, the rest of her journey to superstardom just wasn’t meant to be.

A month before her untimely death, Aaliyah granted MTV’s show “Diary” behind-the-scenes access to her fast-paced life and said, “I am truly blessed to wake up every morning to do something that I love; there is nothing better than that.”

She continued, “Everything is worth it — the hard work, the times when you’re tired, the times when you are a bit sad. In the end, it’s all worth it because it really makes me happy. I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world. I’ve got good friends, a beautiful family and I’ve got a career. I thank God for his blessings every single chance I get.”

So, on August 25, blast Aaliyah’s timeless music loud and remember her for being a trendsetting force in fashion and for helping to redefine and take R&B music to another level.

Steve Jobs resigns from Apple, Cook becomes CEO

(Reuters) – Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs relinquished the reins at Apple Inc to right-hand man Tim Cook on Wednesday, after 14 years in command at a company he brought back from the brink and turned into the world’s largest technology corporation.

Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionized the technology arena with the iPhone in 2007, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that started in a garage and is today neck-and-neck with Exxon Mobil in the race to become the largest U.S. corporation.

Analysts do not expect Jobs’ resignation — which was more a question of when than if — to derail Apple’s fabled product-launch roadmap, including possibly a new iPhone in September a third iteration of the iPad tablet in 2012.

But the company’s shares still dived as much as 7 percent in after-hours trade after the industry icon, who has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17, announced he will be replaced by COO and heir apparent Cook.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come,” he said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.

The 55-year-old CEO had briefly emerged from his medical leave in March to unveil the latest version of the iPad and later to attend a dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for technology leaders in Silicon Valley.

Jobs’ often-gaunt appearance has sparked questions about his health and his ability to continue at Apple.

“I will say to investors: don’t panic and remain calm, it’s the right thing to do. Steve will be chairman and Cook is CEO,” said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

AGAIN, DEEP BENCH

Jobs’ resignation marks the end of an era at Apple.

A college dropout, a Buddhist and a son of adoptive parents, he started Apple Computer with friend Steve Wozniak in the Jobs family garage in Silicon Valley in the late 1970s.

The company soon introduced the Apple 1 computer. But it was the Apple II that became a huge success and gave Apple its position as a critical player in the then-nascent PC industry, culminating in a 1980 IPO that made Jobs a multimillionaire.

Despite the subsequent success of the Mac, Jobs’ relationship with internal management soured, and in 1985 the board removed most of his powers and he left the company, selling all but one share of his Apple holdings.

Apple’s fortunes waned after that. However, its purchase of NeXT — the computer company Jobs founded after leaving Apple — in 1997 brought him back into the fold. Later that year, he became interim CEO and in 2000, the company dropped “interim” from his title.

On Wednesday, Apple shares slid to $357.40 in extended trading after a brief halt. They had gained 0.7 percent to close at $376.18 on the Nasdaq.

Analysts again expressed confidence in the Apple bench, headed by longtime company No. 2 and supply-chain maven Cook.

“Investors are very comfortable with Tim Cook even though Jobs has been a driver of innovation and clearly an Apple success. Tim has shown Apple can still outperform extremely well when he’s been acting as CEO,” said Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross.

“I don’t know if it’s a health issue. I don’t know if it is a shock. Most likely it was going to happen at some point. Why today versus another day? I don’t know.”

Ike’s Place

I finally got a chance to check out the new Ike’s Place, which is right across the street from the old Ike’s.  It’s a small little shop with some seats along the window but there are no chairs and tables to sit at.  Also, be advised that when you walk in there is a pared down menu of the most popular sandwiches but you can still order anything that was on the previous menu.  It was hard to decide what to get but we finally decided on The Spiffy Tiffy and The Damon Bruce, both on warm, crusty sourdough rolls.  The Spiffy Tiffy is halal chicken with pesto,  mushrooms, avocado, provolone, pepper jack and of course the dirty sauce.  I rarely order chicken when I eat out but this sandwich was so worth it.  The cheese was all melted and stringy, the pesto was the perfect complement and the dirty sauce makes it taste like the sandwich is on garlic bread.  Phenomenal.  The Damon Bruce  is thinly sliced rib eye with provolone, onion rings, A-1 steak sauce, and dirty sauce.  I decided to up the filthiness factor by adding mozzarella sticks to it and it was a brilliant move.  Well, to be honest, mozzarella sticks should be added to any sandwich if you have the option but that’s my personal opinion.

All sandwiches come with a bag of yummy kettle chips and they have an amazing selection of sodas that you don’t find at your typical grocery store.  These sandwiches are worth the hype (their Matt Cain sandwich recently won ESPN’s Fanwich contest).  Now if only they will open up an outpost in Marin…
